Minimum order quantity is not one fixed number for every private-label power tool. It changes with the product, customization level, packaging method, component supply and amount of development work.

Why suppliers use MOQs

A production order has several setup costs: branded labels, printing plates, colour matching, packaging materials, component purchasing, line changeover and inspection. A low quantity may be possible for an existing product, while a customized component or new mould requires a larger volume to be commercially workable.

Typical MOQ ranges by customization level

ScopeCommon planning rangeMain MOQ drivers
Existing product with logo and packaging100–500 unitsPrinting, labels, carton and manual
Custom colour or appearance500–1,000 unitsColour material, component batch and setup
Function or structure adjustment1,000–3,000+ unitsEngineering, components, testing and production change
New tooling or new housing3,000–10,000+ unitsTooling investment, validation and production forecast

These figures are planning references, not a quotation. Some products may support a smaller trial order; others may require more because of packaging or component constraints.

The product MOQ and packaging MOQ may be different

A factory may be able to assemble a small product quantity while the colour-box supplier requires a larger print run. Ask separately about the product, colour box, master carton, instruction manual and labels. Excess packaging can sometimes be stored for the next order, but storage terms and artwork version control should be agreed.

Samples do not automatically reduce the production MOQ

A branded sample proves appearance and basic configuration. It does not remove the material and setup requirements of mass production. Confirm the sample fee, number of samples, delivery time and whether any sample charge can be credited after an order reaches the agreed MOQ.

How configuration increases the MOQ

Battery capacity, charger plug, motor, control board, housing colour and accessory sets may each create a separate material batch. Too many versions divide one order into smaller sub-orders.

Reduce versions before reducing quantity. One shared tool configuration with different labels is usually easier to execute than several small combinations of colour, battery and accessories.

Ways to lower first-order risk

  1. Use an existing product and existing colour where possible.
  2. Start with logo, label and packaging rather than structural changes.
  3. Choose one battery and charger kit for the first launch.
  4. Limit the number of packaging languages or use a controlled multilingual design.
  5. Concentrate volume on a focused set of fast-moving categories.
  6. Agree whether unused printed material can carry into a repeat order.

MOQ is only one commercial variable

A lower MOQ can come with a higher unit price, sample charge or packaging cost. Compare the total order value, usable configuration, lead time and repeat-order flexibility. A slightly higher first order may be more efficient if it supports the correct kit and avoids rework.

New tooling needs separate commercial rules

For a new mould, record tooling cost, payment stages, ownership, storage, maintenance, exclusivity and any refund or offset condition. If a tooling fee may be credited after accumulated purchases, the agreement should state the exact quantity or value threshold.

Ask these questions in one RFQ

  • MOQ for the existing unbranded model
  • MOQ for logo and rating label
  • MOQ for colour box and instruction manual
  • MOQ for a custom housing colour
  • Sample fee, sample quantity and credit conditions
  • Production lead time after all approvals
  • Tooling or modification cost, ownership and refund terms
  • Whether excess packaging can be stored for repeat orders

Use a written configuration to compare quotations

Two MOQ quotations may describe different products. Compare the same model, battery kit, charger, accessories, packaging, inspection scope and commercial terms. This turns MOQ from an isolated number into a realistic launch decision.
